SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to extended action from the Premier League, La Liga  and Serie A, with matches scheduled to be played from Friday 31 March to Monday 3 April 2023.

The pick of Premier League matches this weekend is the meeting of Manchester City and Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on the early afternoon of Saturday 1 April. While the Citizens are fighting with Arsenal to claim the title, the Reds find themselves scrapping just to make the top four and secure UEFA Champions League football for next season.

“They [Arsenal] have gone many years without winning the Premier League and that has given them a little bit extra to win games, as they have after 93, 96, or 98 minutes. That desire is something they have that we don’t because we have won back-to-back titles,” admitted City manager Pep Guardiola, as they chase a fifth title in the space of six seasons.

Arsenal will have their chance to respond to City’s result against Liverpool when they face Leeds United at home in the pick of the mid-afternoon kick-offs. The return of Gabriel Jesus from injury has been a major boost for the Gunners: “He looks free, he looks ready. To see him there with a smile on his face was a joy. I was really happy for him,” said manager Mikel Arteta of the Brazilian forward.

Saturday wraps up with Chelsea hosting Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge, while Sunday features West Ham United hosting Southampton and a rematch of the Carabao Cup final, as Newcastle United welcome Manchester United to St James Park.

“We won’t talk of revenge or anything like that in the dressing room, but I am sure the players will have that extra motivation,” said Magpies manager Eddie Howe, who watched his team lose 2-0 to the Red Devils in the cup final at Wembley.

The round wraps up on Monday with Everton hosting Tottenham Hotspur at Goodison Park and chasing a victory in their fight against relegation. “That’s the big thing for me, the mentality,” said Toffees manager Sean Dyche. “Finding that mentality as a group of people, all noses pointing in the right direction, all willing to put everything we can into winning games. That is the starting point.”

SuperSport is the only place where you can get English commentary on the legendary La Liga, where the headline fixture for this round is the meeting of Atletico Madrid and Real Betis at Estadio Civitas Metropolitano on the evening of Sunday 2 April.

Los Rojiblancos are looking to secure third spot behind the title-tussling duo of Barcelona and Real Madrid, while Los Verdiblancos are hoping to claim fourth spot and secure a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

“To finish in the top four will be very difficult,” admitted Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini. “There are high quality opponents also having the same goal. But if we play to our potential and have a little luck along the way, then we could achieve this.”

The round opens on Friday evening with Mallorca hosting Osasuna in a mid-table battle, while the pick of Saturday’s matches sees Barcelona play away to Elche at Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero – with the Blaugrana looking to remain on course for a first title win since 2019.

“We are now in the phase of the season where we cannot afford mistakes, or to take anything for granted,” said Barca manager Xavi Hernandez. “The focus and determination must be there, because our rivals will not let up.”

Saturday also features Sevilla playing away to Cadiz and chasing a key three points in their battle against possible relegation to the second tier of Spanish football. “We must fight hard for the pride of this club and the pride of our supporters,” said Los Nervionenses goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

Sunday sees Real Madrid welcome Real Valladolid to Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, with Los Blancos manager Carlo Ancelotti recently coming to the defence of Aurelien Tchouameni: “He’s got fantastic defensive attributes, when we have to keep the ball, he’s not going to give his best. He’s in good shape and we’re going to have faith in him for upcoming games.”

The top clash from Serie A in this round is the meeting of Napoli and AC Milan at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on the evening of Sunday 2 April. This match represents a ‘changing of the guard’ as far as the Scudetto is concerned, with the Partenopei looking to defeat the Rossoneri and all but mathematically ensure that they will be Italy’s next champions.

“We always talk about future matches, I’ve already said many times that it doesn’t work like that for us. We face them one at a time and the focus is all on the next match,” said Napoli manager Luciano Spalletti. “We don’t have the presumption of being able to manage a championship as if it were a formality or an obstacle to other more important matches.”

The round opens on Saturday with relegation-bound Cremonese hoping to spring an upset at home to Atalanta, before successive matches featuring heavyweights Internazionale and Juventus: the Nerazzurri will be at home to Fiorentina, while the Bianconeri will welcome Verona to the Allianz Stadium in Turin.

Fiorentina manager Vincenzo Italiano has called on his team to eradicate their habit of coming away with one or zero points from matches in which they dominate: “These are the problems that do not allow us to pick up points. I don’t want to be repetitive, but we need to be more focused, concentrated and ready when the ball arrives in the final third.”

Sunday – aside from the Napoli v Milan clash – also features Roma hosting Sampdoria, as well as Lazio facing Monza away from home, with Le Aquile manager Maurizio Sarri hoping to have prolific striker Ciro Immobile fit and firing.

“If Ciro Immobile had been able to play regularly, we’d have an extra 18-19 goals,” said the former Chelsea and Juventus boss. “It’s not as if we are not having the shots on goal, we create the chances and did so again. There were also some situations where we didn’t get a shot away and that was just shameful.”
