Police in Kasese have recovered the lifeless body of a minor who mysteriously went missing barely a week ago.

The deceased identified as Ophius Mumbere, 2, disappeared from his home in Mapata village in Bugoye Sub County in Kasese district under unclear circumstances. Locals claim the child was out playing with other children when he suddenly disappeared. They started hunting for him but in vain, causing the parents to file a case of missing person.

James Katalikawa, the Bugoye Sub County LC III Chairperson, says it was until Wednesday that his decomposing body was discovered in river Nyabyayi.

Nelson Tumushiime, the Rwenzori East Region Police spokesperson, says that they are investigating circumstances under which the deceased went missing and what caused his death.

The incident comes barely a week after a 13-year-old boy in the same sub-county went missing when he went to dig with his parents.

According to the Annual police crime report for 2022, 5.8% of the reported cases were as a result of Child-related Offences with 13,489 cases where children/juveniles were direct targets/victims of crime, compared to 8,681 cases reported in 2021 thus giving 55.3% increase in the registered crimes in this category.
