The rainy season has set in and as tradition demands, the narrow potholed roads of Kampala City must suffer floods and thinning.

The Tuesday March 14 rains started pounding as early as 4:00 am and proceeded till afternoon time causing traffic to come to a standstill in some places and flooding from the poor drainage system and filled up trenches.

John Babiha road was not any different as water flooded the roads to capacity making it impassable for pedestrians and boda boda riders alike. Cars maneuvered through the building waters as motorcyclists struggled to pass, to succeed in crossing these flooded roads is a “miracle” for many.

A boda boda rider lost his motorcycle to the fast-moving waters. Eye witnesses say the rider was attempting to cross through the thick floods when he noticed he was loosing stamina, in the process, he jumped off the machine and let it slide, hoping it would be secured on the other side but that wasn’t the case.

The motorcycle was instead swept into a major drainage channel. What a loss!

The Kampala Capital City Authority has acknowledged the poor road system and recently procured a 1 trillion shillings loan to construct over 30 roads with proper drainage channels, street lights and pavements.

KCCA spokesperson, Simon Kasyate recently stated that they received a $288m (Shs1 trillion) from the African Development Bank (ADB)and the African Development Fund to implement  the road rehabilitation activities in the City under the Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project (KCRRP).

According to KCCA, the poor waste disposal practices over strain the roads as Kampala  residents throw polythene and organic food into drainages, and they get blocked which ensures water flows in the middle of the roads leading to potholes and washing away of some parts of the roads.

The roads to be constructed are in the five divisions of Central, Kawempe, Lubaga, Nakawa and Makindye that make up Uganda’s capital.
