Plans by a group of fired-up activists to hold a press briefing at Obligato in Wandegeya were thwarted on Tuesday afternoon.

These determined youths, two of whom were recently released from jail, have been leading a vocal campaign demanding the immediate resignation of the Speaker of the National Assembly over rampant corruption allegations.

Last week, on Thursday the 15th, these fearless protesters were seen marching to Parliament with bold placards, loudly calling for the Speaker’s resignation. But their demonstration was crushed by police, leading to their arrests and imprisonment.

Following their colleagues release from prison, the group of about 10 youths booked space at Obligato to hold a press meeting. However, their plans for a press briefing were shut down on grounds that they didnt have official approval from police. He refunded their cash and asked them to leave.

Speaking on the sidelines, the youths vowed to keep fighting against corruption and to hold public officials accountable for looting taxpayer money.

During last week’s short-lived march, the activists chanted scathing slogans, accusing the Speaker of leading a gang of “money thieves” who are bleeding the country dry. Though they were forced to disperse, the group has promised to regroup and continue their relentless battle against corruption, with another rally in the works.
